“The Ghost Between Us”

Lost

Sawyer/Kate

Rating: PG

Setting: “The Long Con”

________

Bad

After Sawyer found the guns, he watched the crowd gather near the fire. He smiled in the dark as Jack and Locke battled it out in front of the group. They were clueless. All of them. He scanned the line of people. Sayid’s emotionless face, still numb from the pain of losing Shannon. Claire clutching her precious baby boy. Jin’s mask of fury drawn all over his usually calm expression. And Charlie...Charlie with his hood.

But, Sawyer’s gaze lingered on Kate as she watched Jack and Locke fight. She looked like she wanted to jump in and break it up. She didn’t move from her spot though. It looked like Freckles was enjoying the show as much as he was. She didn’t want to be a peacemaker when watching two men act like fools was far more interesting than restoring order.

Well, things were going to get a hell of lot more interesting now.

Sawyer’s smile grew as he lifted the rifle into the air and fired off a shot.

Mad

Sawyer’s mouth twisted into a smirk as Kate came up to him after his presentation.

In the darkness, her face was an array of orange and black. He caught her reflection in the dark pools of her eyes. He could see the glint in his own eyes. It was like frostbite in June.

“Good thing you don’t hate me, Freckles.” He tilted his head and waited for a response. He was challenging her, and he knew she didn’t back down from anything.

She stared at him, but he made sure she could no longer see through him. The wall had returned.

Sad

Sawyer didn’t sleep that night. It wasn’t that he was afraid of Jack or Locke trying to get the guns or even them ambushing him while he was out. He was afraid of the dreams. He had enemies again. He was the bad guy again.

With that, he had to take in the nightmares too. And maybe he wasn’t ready for them yet.

He sat alone long after the fire had gone out. It was pitch black. The only thing he cradled was his rifle. He listened to the ocean waves come in and out. He shut his eyes for a moment, and he let the breeze hit his face.

Was this was peace felt like?

“You want people to hate you.”

He would never know.

Had

In the morning, Sawyer ate by himself. No one bothered him with a “Good morning” or a “Hello.” He liked this. Next to him was his companion, the rifle. He had a feeling it was going to be only thing beside him for awhile. He liked that too.

He looked up when he saw Kate walking to him. She didn’t give him a “Good morning” or “Hello” either. Her eyes were like knives. She squatted down to his level inside the tent with her hands hidden inside the pouch of her sweatshirt.

“I just wanted you to know one thing,” she said.

He smiled at her. “What’s that, Freckles?”

And then instead of her eyes, her words cut into him.

“You had me, Sawyer.”

He didn’t let his smile slip from his face. “I got everybody, remember? No one suspected a thing.”

“No, Sawyer,” she said. “You had me.”

He knew what she meant the first time. But, it didn’t make any difference. Not now anyway.

So, he said, “What makes you think I wanted you in the first place?”

And she ran. Just like he knew she would.
