Lost

Sawyer/Kate

Setting: right after “Solidarity”

Rating: PG

“What are you doing here?”

Sawyer looked up with a small grin. “What does it look like, Freckles?” He held up the golf club. “I ain’t going fishin’.”

Kate sauntered over to him, picking up the other golf club.

“You think the cave people will mind that us beach combers are messin’ with their game?” Sawyer swung the club in the air. “Or do you think they’ll band together and come after us with some more sharp sticks?”

Kate frowned, not at all amused with his joke. She found the golf ball underneath the moonlight and placed the club iron next to it.

Sawyer chuckled. “Don’t worry, darlin’.  I’m over the whole torture thing. If I want to be buddy-buddy with the doc and the Arab, I guess I have to forgive and forget.”

“You’re actually not going to hold a grudge against them?” she asked.

His face filled with bewilderment. “Why, Kate, are you saying I’m a resentful man?” He smiled in the dark. “If that was true, then I would resent the fact that you punched me in the face after our passionate kiss.”

She dropped her hands to her sides. “I punched you in the face because you lied.”

“That’s something you should have expected. I ain’t no saint, you know.” He positioned himself in front of the golf ball. Kate scowled as he gestured her to move aside. “I ain’t like your precious doctor or like that damn foot solider. Hell, I ain’t even like that psycho with the knives.”

“I know,” she murmured.

He glanced at her and slammed his club into the ball without breaking eye contact with her.

She followed the ball’s trail into the jungle. “How are we going to find it now?”

Sawyer took a flashlight out of his pocket and turned it on.

“I thought you had to give that to Boone,” Kate said.

“What? You think I only had one flashlight?” He pointed the light to the ground and started after the ball. He smiled to himself when Kate appeared next to him.

“You heard about Sayid, right?” she asked, her eyes darting from side to side.

“You mean how he’s on his own private pilgrimage?”

“Do you think he’s…” She let her sentence linger.

“Dead? Alive?” He moved the flashlight along the brush. “Ran into another bear, ya’ll think?”

“Don’t,” she said coldly.

“Hey, you asked.”

“Forget it.” Kate turned to leave.

Sawyer grabbed her arm. “Hey.”

She slowly turned back around. Her eyes were narrowed, her lips tightened in a tense straight line.

He released her and said, “You gonna help me look for the ball or what?”

She returned to her search without saying a word.

Sawyer swayed the flashlight back and forth as they looked through the bushes and tall grass. He looked at Kate again. She was still wearing that green top. The one that made her eyes emerald. He knew because he had been that close to her to see the emerald flecks in her eyes. Damn. To be that close to her again.

“Hey, Freckles,” he said.

She looked up at him.

“Would you notice if I left?” he asked.

“What are you talking about?”

Me. Out there. Alone.” He motioned to the darkness around them. “Would you care? Like you do with the doctor and the solider?”

She rummaged through the grass, ignoring his question.

“Guess that’s my answer,” he mumbled, turning back to the trees.

“Yes,” Kate said a moment later. She was looking at him. “Yes, I would care.”

He walked over to her. The yellow light in between them. She lowered her eyes as he stopped in front of her.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

She returned her gaze to his face. There were those emerald flecks. He bowed his head closer to hers. She did the same. Would this be kiss number two?

“Oh!” Kate slipped past him.

He groaned and turned to where she was going. “What is it?”

She picked up the golf ball with a smile. “Found it.”

“Great.” Sawyer rolled his eyes. “Guess we should be getting back.”

“Wait,” she said.

He raised a brow.

“What would it take for you to tell me your name?” She crossed her arms. “I mean, your real name.”

He smirked. “What do you think?”

She tilted her head. “That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

She placed her hands on his arms, then slid them up towards his neck. She leaned forward until their chests met. Their mouths hovered over each other.

“You really gonna tell me?” she asked.

Their foreheads touched.

He grinned against her smile. “Would I lie to you?”
