Dean didn’t know when it happened. Didn’t know the exact moment, the exact time, or second when things started to change.

But, it did.

The way Sam’s eyes lit up when Jo walked into the room. The way they smiled a not-so-secret smile to each other when they thought no one was looking. The way their hips touched, hands touched, legs touched, feet touched.

Dean didn’t know when it happened.

But, it did.

The thing Jo liked about Sam was how he could make her laugh. Like really laugh. He told the stupidest jokes, ran into walls, and tripped over his long legs. It all made Jo laugh until her stomach ached.

She could almost forget about the rope burns on her wrists.

So, one day, Dean decided to ask.

“You like Sam?”

Jo narrowed her eyes. “Why do you care?”

“I don’t,” he said with a shrug. “I just want to make sure he doesn’t get hurt.”

“Of course.” And she walked away.

The thing Jo liked about Dean was how he could say so much with his eyes. Like when she gave him the last slice of pizza and all he had to do to say thanks was lift his gaze to her face.

She could almost forget about how he had promised to call her.

“I won’t hurt you.” Jo whispered the words as she laid tangled in Sam’s arms.

Sam lifted himself up and looked down at her on the bed. He moved the hair from her eyes, then let his hands wander.

And all Jo wanted was for him to keep touching her, to never let her go.

Something else had changed.

This time it wasn’t something Dean saw or observed. It was something he felt.

The air in the room changed whenever Sam and Jo were there. There was an electricity, a current of energy flowing between the two of them.

It didn’t touch Dean.

“You’re sleeping with him now?”

Jo glared at Dean. “Why do you care?”

“I don’t,” he said with a shrug. “I just want to make he doesn’t get hurt.”

“He won’t.” And she walked away.

Jo cradled her head on Sam’s shoulder. His arm was wrapped around her waist. Their legs were entwined on the bed.

“Do you think we should tell Dean about this soon?” Sam asked.

Jo turned her gaze to the moon outside the window. “He already knows.”

One day, Dean finally brought up the topic to Sam.

“So, this thing with Jo, is it serious?”

Sam frowned. “Why do you care?”

“I don’t.” And each time he said that, he knew he was lying.

Sam looked at Dean--eyes wide and brows knitted--like he could see right through Dean.

“I just want to make sure she doesn’t get hurt,” Dean said.

“It’s a little too late for that, isn’t it?” And Sam looked away.
